Wintertime can be difficult for your smile–holiday food, the busy schedules, and unfortunately, illness that so often accompanies this time of year. Here are some things you can do to take care of your smile during this winter season.
To create a great foundation of oral health, be sure to floss every day and brush twice a day for two minutes. This habit is incredibly important as the season continues. No one wants a cavity interrupting their holiday plans!
Holiday food can also pose problems for your teeth. Many winter foods and drinks are full of sugar, acid, or frequently both. There are the obvious culprits–candy, cookies, hot chocolate, and the like– but there are also less obvious ones: wine and alcoholic drinks, tea with sugar and lemon, sports drinks, and cough drops, for example. Be sure to limit these, or choose sugar-free options. Accompany all acid or sugary drinks and foods with a tall glass of plain water.
Lastly, be sure to replace your toothbrush when you need to. The ADA recommends toothbrushes be replaced every 3-4 months. The holidays are a great time to trade them out! Treat yourself to a brush in your favorite color, or that electric toothbrush you have been eyeing for a while now.
